Artist: JoAnn Godenir ~ [21st Century] Canadian
Reference: see artist's website at www.joanngodenir.com
Canadian mixed-media abstract painter JoAnn Godenir draws on the prairie landscape of her birth to evoke home, memory, and place. Working in oil and cold wax, a medium that demands patience, she builds each piece over many days, slowly deepening its surface. It is a practice rooted in trust, where nothing is rushed, and nothing is forced. Using unconventional tools, including pottery instruments, Godenir creates surfaces with genuine depth and texture, where each mark is earned rather than applied. Her work is held in private and public collections across Canada and the U.S., including a 2025 commissioned installation for Hotel Canoe in Banff, Alberta.

Artist: Marcia Harris ~ [20th century] Canadian
Artist: Marcia Harris ~ [20th century] Canadian
Reference: Marcia Harris was born in Gaspé, Quebec. An interest in art began during Harris's formative years when she entered many contests, including a national one in 1992 where she met her Majesty the Queen at Canada’s 125 birthday celebration in Ottawa. Harris completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts program at the University of British Columbia Okanagan and graduated with distinction in 2004. Since then, she has shown in numerous galleries across western Canada, and has been involved in various public art shows. Though her subject matter is diverse, Harris is best known for her nostalgic depictions of familiar buildings in urban landscapes. Her choice of subject is largely motivated by colour, light, and shadow. Through a distinct use of these elements and a painterly approach, Harris’s expressive vitality provokes an alternative perception of familiar urban spaces. She revels in the unpredictability of colour interactions and embraces the beauty of unresolved moments. Her methodical application of colour balances theory and practice while emphasizing the potent impact of layering light and shadow. Marcia Harris’s work is in the collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Calgary Stampede Art Collection in the BMO Centre and the Glenbow.

Artist: Aron Hill ~ [b.1977] Canadian

Aron Hill currently lives and works in Calgary, Alberta. He graduated from Alberta College of Art and Design in 2000 with a BFA in Interdisciplinary studies. He then completed his MFA at Goldsmiths College, University of London. His work there evolved into installation based projects using traditional drawing and painting methods alongside formal sculptural elements, large format photography and text based work. He has recently been focused on formalist paintings that recall aspects of minimalism and color field paintings though with references to the figure throughout. He finds conceptual company in the late Modernist paintings produced particularly in Canada. The choice of a restricted medium, acrylic ink washes on prepared raw canvas, forces restraint. The work's graphic nature relies on the sheer flatness this medium produces. Aron has exhibited internationally, occasionally lectures, and writes.
