Joanne MacDonald is a self-taught mixed media artist who grew up in rural Quebec. She moved to Calgary in 1980 and connected deeply to this city through college, career, marriage, family, and friendship. Joanne has now lived in Calgary much longer than in Quebec and values being an active part of Calgary’s wonderful and vibrant arts community. Always an artist at heart, Joanne further developed her skills at Alberta College of Art and Design, and at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology by taking continuing education courses.

Kun Chen (Mao) and Chris Savage are a collaborative artist duo based in Calgary, Canada. Working across ceramics, painting, and public art, their practice explores themes of identity, cultural hybridity, and social transformation. Drawing from both traditional and contemporary influences, they create visually layered works that foster cross-cultural dialogue and invite nuanced interpretations of personal and collective narratives.

The pair met in 2017 while completing their Master of Fine Arts degrees at the University of Calgary. In 2020, they founded Mao Projects and established a home studio where their shared vision took shape. Combining Mao’s background as a first-generation Chinese artist with Chris’s Canadian upbringing, their collaborative work reflects a deep commitment to storytelling through material, form, and visual symbolism. Mao and Chris have received recognition through grants and awards from institutions including the Canada Council for the Arts and Calgary Arts Development. Their work has been exhibited across Canada and internationally.

Tannis Marshall is a Calgary-based abstract artist whose work explores the space between nature and abstraction. Through close observation of the natural world, she translates subtle patterns, shifting light, layered textures, and organic forms into expressive paintings that invite viewers to slow down and look closer.
Working intuitively with water and pigments she embraces the unexpected interactions of her materials, allowing movement and balance to emerge through an evolving dialogue between intention and discovery. Rather than representing specific landscapes, her paintings are traced from nature. Capturing its rhythm, atmosphere, and emotional resonance.
Rooted in the belief that slowing down is a conscious act, Marshall's practice has become both a creative process and a place of refuge. Her work encourages moments of stillness and reflection, inviting viewers to rediscover the quiet beauty that often exists in the spaces between.

Reference: An Ojibway artist from Ontario's Curve Lake First Nation in southeastern Ontario, McCue was a self-taught painter who learned from his cousin, Ojibway artist Arthur Shilling. McCue spent 19 years training substance abuse workers in Indigenous communities across Canada; during that time, he worked as a freelance illustrator, producing posters, book covers and illustrations. Reference: Nate McLeod is an artist living and working in Calgary, Canada. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Alberta University of the Arts and is represented by Herringer Kiss Gallery.

Drawing upon a collection of images the artist has amassed over the past two years, McLeod’s recent works adopt the conventions and symbolism of historical still life painting to suggest layered narratives, both personal and universal. The images themselves come from a variety of sources including: screenshots of social media posts; documentation of previous work and the work of other artists; and personal photographs of possessions, food, plants, pastimes, and recent trips. Occasionally, AI image generators are used to expand upon the images by creating variations of the originals. The selection of objects in these works and the way in which they are arranged allude to themes of life, death, and the passage of time.

Reference: Mary-Anne McTrowe was born and raised in southern Alberta, where she earned her B.F.A. at the University of Lethbridge in 1998. She went on to pursue graduate studies at Concordia University in Montreal and received her M.F.A. in studio art in 2001. Her work has spanned a number of different media including performance, installation, and textiles, and in her practice she explores objects that are in states of transformation, focusing on the question of how things that are familiar to us can be made unfamiliar; how a change in context can render something temporarily strange and perhaps even unrecognizable. McTrowe was a member of the now-retired folk art-ernative duo The Cedar Tavern Singers AKA Les Phonoréalistes with Daniel Wong, was a founding member of Trap\door Artist Run Centre, and currently works as a Technician in the Art Department at the University of Lethbridge.

NASARIMBA, meaning 'playful mischief', is the collaborative practice of Calgary artists, Mikhail Miller and Rachel Ziriada. Working together since 2015, the duo has cross-pollinated Mikhail’s background in painting and printmaking with Rachel’s background in multi-media installation and design. They have established themselves across Canada and Mexico through mural painting, street interventions and fine art. NASARIMBA has participated in mural festivals in Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer and Winnipeg and has completed projects for clients including Scotiabank, The City of Calgary, AuArts, Tokyo Smoke, Bailey Nelson, and many other local businesses/community organizations. The summer of 2021 saw their debut in a commercial gallery with a solo exhibition at VIVIANEART in Calgary’s community of Inglewood.

NASARIMBA acknowledges Calgary as the traditional territory of the Blackfoot and the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta.

This collision informs the materials and tools he uses, as well as the content of his work. With an unwavering clearsightedness, he expresses the pain and consequences of colonialism in the North, addressing suicide, alcoholism in extraction industry workers, and the devastation of climate change for Inuit and the animals that surround them.
His artwork represents interpretations of what he knows best: his Inuvialuit culture, the mythology and traditions of his people, and the relationship between land and wildlife. Nasogaluak’s media of expression are sculpture and painting - from monumental stone pieces to miniature ivory carvings or outdoor murals. Nasogaluak has also enjoyed working in the ephemeral art forms of ice and snow.
Nasogaluak’s carvings also materialize spiritual and cultural aspects from Inuvialuit ways of being; his hope is to inspire the next generations to keep Inuit culture central to who they are. He follows the stone and the stories wherever they want to take him. - Art Gallery of Ontario

Reference: Nimkii [they/them] is a multidisciplinary artist, curator, writer, and storyteller. They grew up in Treaty 7 territory in foster care, moving throughout southern Alberta. Their experiences as a metis / nehiyaw / chippewa foster kid deeply inform their artistic practice; and as a storyteller they weave stories that bridge gaps in between, and draw attention to the intersections between liberation and social justice movements; focusing on queer histories, working class history, activism, environmentalism and present day politics. They approach their work through a storytelling lens, placing these histories and truths into personal, understandable and digestible realities into conversation with each other. Nimkii graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Fine arts from NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and is currently an MFA candidate at Alberta University of the Arts.
